This hidden Rutherford gem's history goes back to the 1970s when Bill Godward acquired a quiet ten-acre parcel on a gentle slope of the prestigious Rutherford Bench. This exceptional vineyard sits on prime terroir that produces beautifully fruit-forward Cabernet Sauvignon.
In 2023, a cooler year and one of the best growing seasons of the decade, the result was remarkable structure and a character we don’t often see from warm Rutherford. Gorgeous aromatics of dark fruit and florals are framed by bright acidity, and firm, well-built tannins. Ready to drink now, it will also age beautifully.

In 1970, Bill Godward discovered a tranquil ten-acre parcel set on a gentle downslope along the famed Rutherford Bench. Drawn to the site’s quiet beauty and exceptional soils, he held the land for decades before replanting it in 2002 to Cabernet Sauvignon with the guidance of fourth-generation winegrower Gary Morisoli.
Bill passed away in 2019 at the age of 105, leaving the vineyard to his daughter. His friends and neighbors, the Morisoli family, still farm the Godward Vineyard today and it is regarded as one of Rutherford’s standout sites.
As with all of our wines, winemaker Sam Kaplan oversees the farming of our rows, giving us total control throughout the growing season. Our approach has always been the same: shape the wine in the vineyard, and let it speak for the place and the year.
Situated on classic benchland, the Godward Vineyard produces Cabernet that reflects the warmth and generosity of Rutherford while maintaining structure and balance.
